The Mungiki mayhem - NGO bosses shot dead

By KiN Newsroom

Oscar Foundation Executive Director Kamau King’ara and his counterpart, the Programmes Co-ordinator Paul Oulu were shot dead Thursday evening about 7.30pm as they drove on State House Road in Nairobi. The deaths occurred only hours after Government Spokesman Dr. Alfred Mutua had accused the Foundation of fundraising for Mungiki overseas.

Various towns in the country experienced a tense day full of chaos perpetrated by Mungiki sect members. Police and security personnel quelled most of the chaos leading to many empty streets especially in most parts of Nairobi.

Reports say that two people suspected to be members of the sect were lynched in Thika town. Public transport was paralysed in most major towns in Central and Rift Valley including Nairobi, Nakuru, Limuru, Kikuyu, Thika, Molo, Nyahururu, Othaya, Embu, Muranga, Kirinyaga and Karatina. Fearing attacks, businesses closed in full haste and matatu operators withdrew their vehicles from the routes paralyzing public transport.

The deaths of Kamau King’ara and Paul Oulu came only hours after Dr. Mutua, during his weekly briefing (Thursday), had claimed that Oscar Foundation was behind the Mungiki demonstration. He is quoted to have said, "The illegal demo is planned by Mungiki, NGOs and The Oscar Foundation. The Government assures wananchi that security measures have been put in place to ensure they are not harassed,”.

The demonstrations were, according to the sect members, a direct support of the UN report on extra judicial killings that indicted the commissioner of police and Attorney General. The report had indicted the two for those killed by the police in the past two years.
