Minister for Justice, Constitutional Affairs and National Cohesion, Martha Karua has resigned from the Government.
In her resignation statement, Karua said: "Today, I have tendered my resignation as Minister for Justice, Constitutional Affairs and National Cohesion because I feel my position as minister is untenable following recent decisions in the ministry,"
Parts of the reasons for her resignation can be summed up in what the Prime Minister referred to as "difficulties and frustrations in discharging her ministerial duties". Karua's resignation could not be stopped even by Narc-Kenya who reported that "She asked us not to destroy her by insisting she continues to serve in a position she felt she had no say".
Immediate reactions from parts of the country indicate that the respondents agree that the time was ripe for her to quit. Development Executive Director, Ms Betty Sharon, said Karua was justified by deciding not to be used as a ‘puppet’.
Martha Karua was one of the most instrumental members of the coalition building blocks fighting to retain President Kibaki in the office after the 2007 elections. Apparently, she found herself not besitting the powers she had dreamed of to effectuate the reforms that she deemed appropriate.
She is now going back to the drawing board and opts to build her support from the grassroots to gain the right momentum towards 2012. The resignation sends a clear signal to the Government since Karua was a stalwart defender of the President and the PNU side of the coalition.
