Mungiki leader new Nairobi Governor?

By Jakarateng'

The race for the 2012 elections is on for several contestants albeit still in the hiding. One man who has openly declared interest in the governor's position for the Nairobi County is former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga. The latter was at one point one of the most feared leaders of a sect that has been accused of causing havoc and pain to many residents of the city and the neighbouring towns.

Interestingly, Maina commands lots of respect from his followers even after being saved (born again) and is now a peace loving Christian. He preaches peace and is geared towards developing the city and returning it to the old 'city in the sun' glory if elected Governor of Nairobi in 2010. This is deemed a tough job but with his background as the leader of an empire that spread its horizons to most of central Kenya where he maintained discipline and order within the ranks in Mungiki, Njenga is one to watch. Needless to mention, on his release, Maina matched into the city followed by thousands of his 'soldiers' at that time. Most of those foot soldiers later joined their leader during the 'Yes' campaigns and became part of the winning team that ensured Kenya a new Constitution that was later promulgated on the 27th. August 2010 at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.

A turn of events and religious conviction has seen Njenga gaining access and mingling with top dignitries of the country during the recent 'Yes' campaigns. He is now a preacher of peace and is encouraging his one time dubbed 'dangerous Mungiki soldiers' to make good of their lives and develope the country. Whatever happens to his candidacy and desire to govern the Nairobi County, Njenga has shown that people can change.
