Grete Waitz is dead

Norway's athletics' queen, Grete Waitz passed on at Ullevål Hospital in Oslo early Tuesday 57 years old. Grete who was awarded the King's medal for her top class athletic performances has been struggling with cancer since being diagnosed in 2005. The following are some of the international medals the Norwegian marathon legend brought home from competitions around the world: 
  • Olympic: Silver in 1984
  • World Cup: Gold in 1983
  • Marathon wins: New York 9 times (1978-80, 1982-86, 1988), London 2 times (1983, 1986) and Stockholm 1 (1988).
  • Five times World Cross-Country Champion (1978-1981 og 1983).
Grete started the annual Grete Waitz-road race in Oslo in 1984. The race has since been renamed 'Sentrumsløpet' and is scheduled for 7th. May 2011.
