A Norwegian missionary cum school manager and initiator of Jan's Academy, Mr Jan Kristensen has been reported dead in Kisumu Kenya. Jan from Porsgrunn left his boutique job in Norway and left for Kenya in 1979 where he worked as a missionary around the country including Muhoroni and among slum dwellers in Nairobi. He later settled in Kisumu where he, together with International Fellowship Kenya (INTERFELK) Childrens Ministry started what would later be Jan's Academy. At the time of his death, Jan had realised some of his greatest dreams by establishing Jan's ECD, Jan's Junior, Jan's Senior, Jan's Teachers Training College and completed Jan's Academy Quadruple which opened its doors to new students in 2012. He was now preparing for the grand opening of the already built health center this October.

The Academy has a Primary and Secondary wing that offers full boarding facilities to several children and has a total of over 400 children. The school caters also for street children who get professional assistance from specially trained personnel.

Reports reaching KiN has it that Jan lost his life during a robbery attack by at least four men at his house in Kisumu. Three of the robbers are reportedly dead after Police arrived and opened fire on them. The 73 year old missionary is said to have lost his life Thursday morning after the robbers expecting to find cash in his house realised there was no money in the house.

More reports reaching our newsroom state that police suspect the thugs to be the same ones who robbed Jan's office at Milimani only two days before this fateful day. According to fresh police reports, one of the robbers who died in the line of fire was related to Jan's wife, Mrs Anne Okech Kristensen.
A memorial service for the late Missionary, will be held on Tuesday, 17th September 2013 at the Jan's Academy Hall within the main school compound as from 10.00 a.m. All are welcome.
Jan's son and friends arrive in Kisumu
KiN sends Heartfelt condolences to the family of Jan Kristensen and the entire Project Gatebarn, Norwegian help organisations and all supporters, students and staff of Jan's Academy.

If the Police were involved the the Inspector General should move fast and replace, detain and clear the mess.

We send our deep condolences to the family and friends of Jan plus the entire Jans Academy and Gatebarn Project. Jan was a great man who has helped in many ways to solve the challenges faced by many children and especially street and orphaned children in Kisumu. We pray for peace and calm during this trying time and hope that the Gatebarn Project and Jans Academy will get more positive focus and support to continue the good work that Jan started and offered his life for.

Rest in Peace.
