Mpeketoni town near Lamu attacked by arsonists

KiN Newsroom
Gun wielding arsonists reportedly descended on Mpeketoni town which is about 20 kilometers southwest of Lamu. Reports have it that at least 50 people are confirmed dead and several others injured in the militia attack already blamed on the al-Shabab group. Kenya's Interior Minister said the attackers entered the town in two minivans around 8pm this Sunday. They disembled and started shooting indiscrimately.

The assailants are said to have assaulted a Police station and set two hotels and several vehicles on fire during the deadly ordeal in the otherwise calm region. According to Lamu County Police Commander Leonard Omollo, "All the dead are men. There are no women or children, and this fairly complicates matters. We may not tell immediately whether the attacks were done by Al Shabaab, the MRC (Mombasa Republican Council) or just mere criminals".

The military and police are on high allert in the area but had not arrested anybody in connection with the attack this Monday morning.
