Gangsters raid Raila’s private offices

By Cyrus Ombati
Gangsters raided the private offices of Prime Minister Raila Odinga and stole Sh400,000, three computers, documents and a gas cylinder.

This is the second raid on the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi, which also serve as Raila’s private offices.

During the Saturday incident, the gangsters escaped with a laptop, which officials claimed had vital information on the Foundation.

The stolen money was in local and US currencies.

A caretaker said he found one of the doors broken on Sunday morning. The raiders ransacked the offices, meaning they had enough time, and found the money in one of the drawers.

Police toured the offices on Sunday as part of their investigation. Two guards who were on duty are at large and police said they are looking for them.

"We do not know if it is only the money and the computers they wanted, but our officers are on the ground pursuing various leads," said Kilimani OCPD Francis Nyamatari.

The guards were not aware of the robbery and left before the caretaker noticed the broken door.

Four offices

The attackers used the rear door to access the building and went into at least four offices, including the one Raila uses.

Raila was there last week, before he left for Germany, an official said.

The attack was the second one in two years. In 2007, a gang stole computers and documents from the office.

Meanwhile, police are looking for a gang that terrorised residents at Ngei Estate on Saturday night and stole their property. The gangsters broke into several houses and stole household goods before escaping.
