Kenya’s Barakarunner athletes dominated this year’s Strömstad Mile competition last Saturday. Sammy Kurui won the men’s 10KM race with a sporty 29.05 minutes while the best woman (Swedish –Kenyan) Isabellah Andersson crossed the finishing line at 33.54.
This is the second time Kurui won the race. Two year’s ago, Kurui won the mile clocking in at 28.39 slightly behind the track record of 28.34 that was set by Silia Sang in 2004.

Kurui won the race with a two seconds margin ahead of Eliud Kiptanui who finished at 29.07. John Mnangat Sompol (also from Barakarunner) took the third position after running 29.16 minutes. The Kenyan team at this event had earlier (on Friday 3rd. July) participated at the Golden League’s Bislett Games in Oslo where they also left a name to be remembered. The 21 year old Kurui finished the 5000km distance at Bislett clocking in 13.29. The race was won by Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele with 13.04.

The majority of Kenyan athletes who participated at the event belong to the Barakarunner organization. Barakarunner is organized with the sole goal of helping children and youth in Kenya.

The best non-Kenyan competitor at the 10KM men’s event was Mikael Ekvall from Strömstad Löparklubb. The Swedish favorite athlete crossed the finishing line clocking 31.18 minutes, 12 slots after Kurui.

The event attracted all walks of people including families, both young and old.
The fastest woman at the 10KM event was Strömstad’s Isabellah Andersson from Hässelby Sports Club. Isabellah migrated from Kenya but is now married and resides in Sweden. She won the women’s race by a good margin ahead of her closest challenger, Sharon Jemutai Kipsang from Barakarunner. With a competitive 33.54, Isabellah did not only win the race but also improved her time from the 2008 event where she finished second with 35.01. Behind Andersson came Sharon who ran the distance at 37.23, while Helene Willix from Spårvägens FK took the third place with her 37.46 minutes.

The fastest woman at the 5 km event was Barakarunner’s Nelly Jepkosgei. The softspoken Kenyan athlete won the race clocking in at 18:22. Linn Nilsson from Halle IF followed her closely finishing second with 19:07. Rebecka Andersson from Strömstad Löparklubb finished third with 19:35.
