KiN Reports
Heads are turning and many officers are on their toes as the anti-graft team sets the pace for cleaning the corridors of power in Nairobi and most parts of the country.
Nairobi Mayor, Geoffrey Majiwa spent Monday night at Kilimani Police Station and appears in court today facing corruption charges. According to KACC spokesman Nicholas Simani, Majiwa faces charges of "conspiracy to defraud the public and willful neglect to perform official duty as stipulated in the Penal Code".
The Mayor stands accused over a cemetery saga which broke out last year after it emerged that the City Council had paid out Kshs 283 million for a land worth Kshs 30 million. The council was made to purchase the 120-acre land in Mavako Township actually deemed unsuitable for a cemetery at a very exhorbitant price way above the market price.
Majiwa was arrested and whisked away from his Nairobi South C residence to the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) headquarters for questioning. Former Nairobi deputy Town Clerk Geoffrey Katsolleh and several former council officials, including former Town Clerk, John Gakuo are also facing court charges for the scandal.
