In 1884, mainland Tanzania became a German colony. In 1890, the Sultanate of Zanzibar became a British Protectorate. In 918, Tanganyika became a British mandated territory but the country gained her independence from the British on 9th. December 1961.
Zanzibar gained her independence on 19th. December 1963. One year later on 26th. April 1964, Tanganyika united with Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and later secured her official name, United Republic of Tanzania, on the 29th. October 1964.
