Gangsters in Athi River sensationally killed three police officers in Athi River, in a daring dawn attack. The armed gangsters, who had just robbed off attendants at a petrol station, ambushed the flying squad officers, attached to Athi river police station. The officers are reported to have arrived at the scene of crime after being tipped of the robbery.

Armed robbery by thugs who dare not spare lives as they go around their business is becoming a serious security issue in Kenya. Only a few days ago, Youth and Sports Permanent Secretary Murugu Kinuthia was shot and seriously wounded in a robbery in Nairobi’s Hurlingham area. Kinuthia was reportedly driving to Lavington at about 3am (20.06.2009)when he was confronted by gunmen along Muringa Road, near Yaya Centre. On defying the gang's orders to stop, Kinuthia was shot in the chest leading to his admission at Nairobi Hospital. The robbers escaped with Kinuthia's money and other personal effects.

According to witnesses, the PS was blocked by a Prado that had about five occupants. When he refused to stop on demand and attempted to make a U-turn, the gang opened fire. Kinuthia's car lost controll and landed in a ditch. The gang pounced on the vehicle and ransacked him, stealing what they deemed worth.

According to the police, the thugs left the scene and drove to Thika. They attacked several motorists on the way to Thika

As if the attcak on the PS and the killing of the flying squad officers was not enough, Kenyatta University lecturer Peter Kenya was shot dead outside his house in Maziwa estate, Nairobi just a few days before the attack on the PS.

The thugs are still at large and may be planning or are already enganged in several criminal activities.
